"IJMIA THING" - Leomi Sadler & Russell Maurice
This is a collection of works released at the two-person exhibition "IJMIA THING" by Leomi Sadler, a UK-based artist who creates a strange and humorous visual world influenced by underground comics and DIY culture, and Russell Maurice, a British artist living in Japan who is widely known as "Gaius."
Their work is characterized by the fact that each piece is clearly independent, like a cel animation, yet the same movement is repeatedly layered on top of each other. Opposing elements such as stillness and movement, flatness and solidity, transparency and opacity coexist simultaneously, giving it a slight "sense of life." Rather than simply following the laws of physics, it feels like they are gently shaking up conventions.
This film takes a fresh look at the magical possibilities hidden within animation and offers a new perspective from a place slightly outside the institutional framework of art.
