"Scrapyard" is a photo book by Michael Schmelling, a photographer, designer and editor who has demonstrated his brilliance in a wide range of fields, having photographed portraits of Steve Lacy, Grimes, Lil Nas X, and Ezra Koenig, as well as record jackets for Sharon Van Etten, and photo books for Dennis Hopper and Odd Future.
Every day in the city of Los Angeles, you can see junkyards piled high with all kinds of metal objects, including used electrical appliances and car parts. This project began when Michael wondered, "How much can I sell that bed frame or frying pan for?" and stepped into a junkyard. He met various people there and photographed trash/scrap from his own unique perspective. The book includes an essay by Michael himself about his long-standing inspiration.
