Everyone has heard of the Grateful Dead. Their pioneering philosophy of free and sharing formed a culture. This exhibit features everything related to the cassette tape, which was at the heart of that culture.
The Grateful Dead were a rock group that transcended the category of band. By the time they called it quits in 1995, they had become an international institution with a vast and devoted fanbase and an archive of both official and bootleg recordings.
Despite existing in a legal grey area for decades, the bootleg live cassette tapes that cemented their legendary status are unique in their cultural significance in music history, and the story of their creation, trade, and endless proliferation is a human history in itself.
Featuring striking visuals culled from hundreds of cassette jackets, as well as interviews with tape enthusiasts and members of the Grateful Dead, this work delves into the history of the band, encapsulating the band's psychedelic culture, its anarchic graphic style, and its obsessive love for the black market fan community. Released by Anthology Editions, New York.
