Hidden Fortress catalogues 20 years (2006–2026) of work made across 59 notebooks by publisher and graphic designer Tim Coghlan of Knowledge Editions. The first notebook, started in 2006, was filled with drawings, collages, and photographs. Over time, drawing gradually took a step back as the focus shifted towards collage and the collecting of found imagery. This process began to form the practice of making zines and books cataloguing found imagery and photography, which eventually led to the beginning of Knowledge Editions in 2012.
On Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at 7:50 AM, Tim established the 930 Archive, a continually expanding collection of images exploring impact and consequence, sourced daily from the vast expanse of the internet. This relentless pursuit of collecting, cataloguing, and archiving imagery has informed much of the work made in the notebooks since 2019. Alongside imagery sourced from books, comics, and newspapers, this material has shaped most of the works laboured over in each notebook.
All of the work within these notebooks has informed the final works made for Hidden Fortress, with a strong focus on the exploration of impact and the power of collected imagery. Alongside this, Tim has made reference a major focus of the exhibition, exploring what has been a constant influence on his work since the age of six: heavy metal, film, and comics.
Hidden Fortress allows people into the heavily fortified personal work of Tim.
At this exhibition, in addition to the art books “Hidden Fortress” Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, silkscreen works will be exhibited and available for purchase. In addition, merchandise such as T-shirts designed by the artist Stefan Marx will also be on sale.
