EXHIBITION |Saturday, April 27, 2019 - Sunday, May 26, 2019

Lilian Martinez “Rosa Mariposa”

Opening: Saturday, April 27th, 18:00 - 20:00
*Artists will be coming to Japan to participate.

Venue: Gallery Commune

This will be the first solo exhibition in about a year and a half by Lillian Martinez, the artist and founder of the LA brand "bfgf," which has many fans around the world and instantly captivates anyone who sees or touches her work.

Through her work, Martinez questions the history of human rights for women, particularly women of color.
She combines classical architectural elements with contemporary pop culture to fuse the past, present, and future, creating a narrative backdrop for her work. Her bold, flat style, which focuses on depicting brown subjects that have traditionally been omitted from portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, is reminiscent of iconic figures such as Matisse.

When she began creating the works for the exhibition, Martinez was driving home from her studio when she witnessed a large migration of butterflies from Mexico to Los Angeles. Fascinated by this strange and mysterious sight, she chose the title of this exhibition "Rosa Mariposa (Pink Butterfly)," a cheerful and vibrant sounding word that evokes beauty and femininity.
The "Rosa Mariposa" series of photographs primarily features women. The women depicted express both vulnerability and strength. The colors worn by these women, who combine softness and strength, are dazzling yet delicate. This balanced duality brings comfort and joy not only to the viewer but also to the work itself.

At the venue, we will be selling the exhibited works and the blankets and cushions that are synonymous with "bfgf," as well as the release of new merchandise. We look forward to seeing you there.
