DEADBEAT CLUB's long-awaited new title, "Stiya," by Cole Barash, will be launched here in Tokyo for the first time worldwide. This latest work takes a unique documentary approach to uncover the similarities he felt between the devastation of Storm Stella, which struck Cole's hometown of Wellfleet, Massachusetts, and the birth of his daughter, Iya. Approximately 20 works from the photobook will be on display in the gallery. A DEADBEAT CLUB POP-UP will also be held at the same time. In addition to the photobook and zine, new merchandise will also be available for purchase. Cole and Clint (DEADBEAT CLUB) will also be in Japan for the opening. We look forward to seeing you there.
I never expected to connect the two, but I found myself drawn to photographing both. I spent several days walking through the dunes, the beaches, the lakeside and the forests, focusing on areas that were hard hit and areas that weren't.
I realized that the places affected by the storm felt like delivery rooms. The pressure, the elation, the excitement and fear of witnessing an overwhelming transformation of energy. I was intrigued by these two spaces where the storm had transformed them. I wondered what would become of these places.
We were on high alert and prepared for the worst. Storm after storm warning arrived. Storm Stella was heading toward our town of Wellfleet, Massachusetts, with winds reaching 75 mph, its strongest on record. Just two days earlier, our first daughter, Aiya, had been born.
During the four-day labor that followed, I found myself drawn to the ambiguity of the delivery room. The mirrors in the room were particularly intriguing, offering a new perspective on the room and the relationship between my wife and the midwife.
The various forms of equipment, the intense body language, and all the communication that took place during that epic, monumental moment from the moment of birth to my daughter's first breath of fresh air—I was captivated by all the elements of one of life's most important and beautiful experiences.
