Andy Mister Book Launch Exhibition “Discrete Series”

Venue: Gallery Commune

We will be holding the "Discrete Series" exhibition to celebrate the release of "Distorted Ghosts," a new book by Andy Mister, an artist based in Beacon, NY, who creates works that stimulate the sense of the boundary between the ordinary and the extraordinary, the moment before falling asleep, and the sensation of waking up from a dream.

The works in this exhibition were inspired by the jacket of a reprint of a collection of poems by American poet George Oppen (published in 1966), and the exhibition name is derived from the book's title, "Discrete Series." The exhibition tells a single story as a whole, but each drawing series can also function individually as a standalone work. We look forward to seeing you there.

I call the whole series a "compilation," as a kind of visual mixtape, and the works are arranged in the exhibition like a teenage bedroom filled with clippings of my favorite bands and artists. By considering these drawings as a series, the viewer's relationship with the works is strengthened. Looking closely, you can see traces of my hand, as well as the ink, acrylic, carbon pencil, and charcoal I used. However, I aim to portray the work as closely as possible to the original image, hoping that the viewer will stop and begin to understand the work, questioning whether it is a painting or a photograph.
