In 1919, W.A. Dwiggins and L.B. Siegfried (Society of Calligraphers) in Boston
They published a tongue-in-cheek pamphlet called "Extracts from an Investigation into the Physical Properties of Books as they are at Present Published."

This is a satirical research report that purports to have examined "every book published since 1910," and its conclusion is that "all modern books are poorly written."

The committee satirically criticized the book design of the time, the quality of printing, the lack of craftsmanship and attention to detail, and even went so far as to ask, "Are books really necessary in today's society?", concluding that the answer was "no."
