We are pleased to present "The Absolute Recedes," an exhibition by Brian Merriam.

This exhibition celebrates the publication of her collection “The Absolute Recedes,” which was first shown at the San Francisco Art Book Fair 2024, and with this exhibition Merriam attempts to take the book’s uniqueness one step further.

All works are printed on handmade paper from around the world (Nepal, Japan, Mexico), and unlike traditional edition-based photo prints, the unique characteristics and features of the paper are incorporated, giving each work its own distinctive look. These are more like living creatures than photographs hung on the wall, unique, organic, and even ephemeral.

Looking around the venue, numerology (divination using numbers to predict one's future) and esoteric symbolism (an artistic movement that seeks to symbolically express the inner world) are subtly woven throughout. While generally unnoticeable, they are obvious to those who know how to look. These elements are intended to add power and resonance to the space, and although invisible, they can be physically felt by those present.

Brian Merriam | Brian Merriam is an artist and musician living in Los Angeles, California. His work is deeply personal yet largely metaphorical, exploring universal concepts through direct engagement with power spots and natural phenomena. Through his work, he seeks to demonstrate that resonant symbolic forms exist everywhere, from the microcosm to the Himalayan peaks, where he has traveled extensively. He is represented by Los Angeles-based gallery Tappan.
